Walthausen uses a value strategy in the micro and small-cap segments of the US domestic equities market. Through a bottoms-up methodology, they strive to construct a diversified portfolio of quality companies with the best reward to risk ratios as determined by their analysts with an understanding of the specific business risks as reviewed by the portfolio manager. The firm’s sell discipline consists of 3 parts: (1) they look to trim positions back to a full weight after it has appreciated beyond a specific threshold, (2) when Walthausen discovers an opportunity that exceeds that of an incumbent holding, and (3) when there is a material degradation of return on invested capital.
