Satoru Iwata (jap. Iwata Satoru; * 6. Dezember 1959 in Sapporo), ist der Präsident (daihyō torishimariyaku shachō) des Videospiel-Pioniers Nintendo. Nach seinem Studium bekam er eine Stelle bei HAL Laboratory, einer Nintendo unterstehenden, abhängigen Entwicklerfirma, die u.a. für erfolgreiche Spiele-Reihen wie Kirby, Adventures of Lolo oder Super Smash Bros. verantwortlich ist. Des Weiteren war er an weiteren erfolgreichen Spielen der Firma Nintendo beteiligt. Unter seiner Leitung entstand die siebte und achte Generation der Nintendo-Heimkonsolen, Wii und Wii U, sowie der Nintendo 3DS (XL).

Biografie
Satoru Iwata wurde 1959 auf der zweitgrößten Insel Japans, Hokkaidō, geboren. Iwata hatte bereits früh Interesse an der Herstellung von Videospielen. Er schrieb während seiner Freizeit gerne Spiele für seinen elektronischen Taschenrechner.

Nach dem Beenden der Oberschule schrieb sich Iwata an der Technischen Hochschule Tokio ein. Iwata begann anfänglich als Spiele-Programmierer für HAL Laboratory, Inc zu arbeiten.
Während der 1980er war Iwata an vielen Projekten der HAL beteiligt. Außerhalb seiner Tätigkeit für HAL arbeitete Iwata auch unabhängig für NCL. Er war für die Programmierung einer Anzahl von NCL entwickelten Spielen verantwortlich. Nur ein Jahr, nachdem er bei HAL angefangen hatte, begann Iwata, Software-Produktion und Entwicklung der verschiedenen bei Nintendo erschienenen Titel zu koordinieren.

Während Satoru Iwata häufig als der Schöpfer des Spiels Kirby genannt wird, war es in Wirklichkeit Masahiro Sakurai, der den Charakter Kirbys sowie das Grundmodell für das Spiel entwickelte. Jedoch war es Iwatas Mitarbeit im Projekt, die schließlich den ersten Titel in der Reihe hervorbrachte. Das Spiel war für Nintendos ursprüngliches Game-Boy-Handsystem bestimmt. Die Absicht war, ein Spiel für Anfänger zu kreieren, in dem jeder Spieler jede mögliche Fähigkeit, jedes Level und das Ende erreichen konnte. Kirbys Dreamland wurde in Japan am 27. April 1992 und in Amerika im August des gleichen Jahres veröffentlicht.
