Firestone, Colorado (August 6, 2014) - Flatiron, one of the largest infrastructure contractors in North America, has secured a contract for the State Route 520 West Approach Bridge North in Seattle, Washington. The $199.5 million project for owner Washington State Department of Transportation includes building two new west approach bridges - one each direction for eastbound and westbound traffic - that will connect the new SR 520 floating bridge to the Montlake area.

"This is our third project in Washington, and our second for the Washington State Department of Transportation and secures our presence as a major transportation contractor in Washington," said Richard Grabinski, vice president of Flatiron's Western Region. "We are looking forward to building this tremendous project, and hopefully other future projects that will help improve infrastructure across the state."
The project includes the construction of a new 6,000 foot, 41 span precast girder bridge that will serve as the ultimate west bound SR 520 bridge at the west end of the SR 520 floating bridge to Montlake Avenue. Project structures will be built to modern earthquake standards and will also support a six-lane corridor with a bicycle and pedestrian path that connects to local and regional trails. Other benefits of this new project are environmental improvements like a new Arboretum trail, a public park north of SR 520, and a storm water treatment facility.
Construction will begin late this summer, and is scheduled for completion in 2017.
