James Hazel

Dr. James Hazel is a Research Programme Manager at Stichting Access To Medicine Foundation.
He leads the programme’s dedicated research team.
He has extensive experience applying quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to analyse the ethical, legal, and social implications of complex issues, including international genomics research initiatives and the direct-to-consumer genetic testing industry.
Prior to joining the Foundation, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Health Policy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the USA, where he approached issues of access primarily through the lens of a biomedical researcher.
He holds a law degree (J.D.) from Vanderbilt University Law School and a Ph.D.
in Molecular Biology from the University of Wyoming, where his doctoral research focused on the mitotic spindle, the target of many chemotherapeutic cancer drugs.
