In his past career he was Director-Molecular Biology at Gene Center Munich, General Secretary at Internat Human Frontier Science Programm, President for Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Professor-Emeritus at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Vice President of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, First General Secretary at European Research Council and Member-Supervisory Board at MediGene AG.

He received a doctorate and an undergraduate degree from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
